GLIBA’s Exciting New Partnership!

4/1/2025

In these uncertain economic times budgets are tight and we don’t know what the future holds for GLIBA. This has inspired us to rethink how we fund our association. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our newest partnership: the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association is now proudly sponsored by Taco Bell □□

GLIBA has officially partnered with the world’s premier purveyor of late-night culinary innovation and the most electrifying beverage known to humankind, the Baja Blast.

We know this is a bold, unexpected move. But independent booksellers have always been about thinking outside the bun.

To commemorate this historic partnership, we’re offering limited-edition shirts featuring a tasteful rendering of our new logo.

And don’t forget to join us this October for our annual Heartburn Fall Forum.

What We’re Reading:

“There’s Always This Year" by Hanif Abdurraqib is as electrifying and bittersweet as the first sip of a Mountain Dew Baja Blast—deeply nostalgic, unexpectedly poetic, and guaranteed to leave you refreshed.

If you are looking for an unexpected and bold mix of classic and modern flavors that leave you questioning reality, and your grip on time, you might love Louise Erdrich’s “The Sentence” parried with a deliciously crunchy Doritos Locos Taco.

Twenty-seven Independent Bookstores Ready Their Shelves

for Annual Indy Book Crawl

Indianapolis, IN—MARCH 4, 2025--The Indy Indie Book Crawl (IIBC) will span Central Indiana for its second year on March 20-23, 2025, with 27 independent bookstores and 7 literary organizations participating. This year’s book crawl is generously supported by Indiana Humanities and Butler MFA, as well as local business sponsors Maywright Property Group, Cafe Lending, Pegedo E-Bikes, UVA Wine Tastings, and Bottleworks Hotel, and venue sponsor Maven Space.

For IIBC, Hoosier bookworms visit as many participating locations as possible (no purchase necessary) for chances to win great prizes like a free night at the Bottleworks Hotel, gift cards, and merch from participating bookstores. IIBC welcomes everyone - from casual readers to literary aficionados - to explore the growing independent literary scene in Central Indiana and connect with other story-lovers in their community.

"A bookstore — especially an independent bookstore — is just as much a gathering space for folks to meet and share ideas as it is a place to find their next favorite book. Each of the bookstores on this crawl is a crucial part of our community, and Indiana Humanities is thrilled to be a part of this event to encourage support of local booksellers and connection within the literary community," said Megan Telligman, director of programs for Indiana Humanities.

The format will remain the same as the first IIBC in 2024: visit any of the participating

bookstores and they will stamp your official bookmark (available at all book crawl locations

starting on 3/20). At the conclusion of the book crawl, enter your information into the form linked on the official bookmark and the Indy Indie Book Crawl Instagram page and you will be entered to win one of three prize packs. The more stores you visit - the higher your chances of winning!

New features for this second annual book crawl include four more bookstores participating

compared to the previous year, a new Bookstore Bingo full of activities to complete with local literary organizations to win additional prizes (like UVA Wine Tastings and Pedego bike rentals), and a sold-out Book Crawl Kickoff Party in partnership with Silent Book Club Indy on Wednesday, March 19 at Maven Space.

“I think the success of last year’s book crawl took us all by surprise. It was wonderful to see that level of enthusiasm for our growing Indy lit scene and to introduce the Golden Hour experience to people from far outside our neighborhood’s streets. The book crawl brought in countless new faces, many of whom, a year later, we now consider regulars. We’re so excited to take part in it again,” said Sara Gelston Somers, owner of Golden Hour Books

“The first Indy Indie Book Crawl in 2024 blew away all our expectations - over 2,000 people participated from all over the Midwest. We’re expecting an even bigger turnout for this year’s crawl! It’s incredible to see the Indy literary community in collaboration together - readers, bookstores, and literary organizations, as well as the broader support and excitement from the Indy community. See you in March,” said Jake Budler, co-owner of Tomorrow Bookstore and creator of Indy Indie Book Crawl.

All information about the 2025 Indy Indie Book Crawl – including the participating locations – will be posted to the official Instagram page: @indyindiebookcrawl. For more information or questions regarding the promotion of IIBC, please contact Kasey Upchurch at [email protected].

About Schuler Books

Schuler Books is an independent bookstore with four locations across Michigan. Husband and Wife Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld, graduates of the University of Michigan, opened our first store in Grand Rapids in 1982. Our second store opened in Okemos in 1990, and we added our Ann Arbor store, formerly Nicola’s Books, in 2014. Our newest store in West Bloomfield opened in May 2023. Even though our four stores are larger than the average independent bookstore, we’re still small independent booksellers at heart. We value our relationships with the communities we serve and with our local and Michigan authors.

Kalamazoo Mourns Dean Margaret Hauck of Michigan News Agency

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Anyone who has driven down Michigan Avenue through downtown Kalamazoo has probably noticed a sign that reads "Michigan News Agency."

Opening in 1947, Michigan News Agency is a longtime newsstand and bookstore business that has withstood decades of change in the city.

According to family members on social media, the owner and locally-known icon, Dean Margaret Hauck, died on Saturday.

Hauck was known for her love of reading and writing, and keeping the community connected through newspapers and magazines. These values were reflected in the large sign at the front of the store that says "Eat Sleep Read Local".

Additionally, Hauck made sure the store maintained its reputation of being open seven days a week. In 2019, she told News Channel 3 why the store would remain open even during a blizzard:

"You can't be closed, never. We're open everyday of the year," Hauck said. "Staff are sourced so that we are open because that's our reputation--and we live by it."

However, customers looking to shop at the store over the weekend noticed an unfamiliar sight: a closed sign on the door with no indication as to when it will reopen.

Hauck was so well-known in the community that State Rep. Julie Rogers took to Facebook Sunday to express her condolences.

Save the Date! Third Annual MI Book Hop

Saturday April 26 through Sunday, May 26, 2025

Happy New Year! We hope that your holiday season was successful, rewarding, and not too stressful.

While January is typically a time of rest, it’s also when we are dreaming, scheming, and planning the new year. And for GLIBA Member Stores in Michigan, we’re asking that you include the 2025 MI Book Hop on your calendar!

If you’ve not heard of the MI Book Hop, let us introduce ourselves! MI Book Hop is a volunteer-run Book Hop across Michigan organized and administered by fellow Booksellers. It kicks off on Independent Bookstore Day and runs through Mother’s Day weekend – Saturday April 26 through Sunday, May 26, 2025. MI Book Hop started in 2023 when Laura Harvey from Adventure Ink in Milan pulled a group of interested stores together and started outreach to more stores. GLIBA Director Larry Law has served as a sounding board since its inception and generously donated his time to design our mascot graphic and create our Bingo cards each year. The MI Book Hop became an official GLIBA Committee late 2024.

The Hop was created to generate more fun around Independent Bookstore Day and extend the excitement out a little farther and introduce potential new customers to stores. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for stores to participate as well as simple and fun for participants. 2024, the second year of MI Book Hop, showed exponential growth both in stores and customers participating, and we believe our third year will be even better.

Participation is easy! Customers pick up a Bingo sheet at participating stores, then visit stores and complete other bookish tasks to get a Bingo or fill their sheet. Stores stamp Bingo cards, collect finished cards, report results, and assist in distributing gift cards to winners. They also share in marketing the Hop by posting on their social media channels and featuring in store emails. There is a small buy-in fee to participate which is used to purchase the grand prize, gift card prizes from winning stores, and commemorative pins.

MI Book Hop has a website, and Facebook and Instagram accounts. We also have a Bonfire store. Bingo cards may be viewed on our social media channels for reference.

If you’d like to indicate your interest in participating and be included on the 2025 MI Book Hop emailing list, click here! Deadline to apply for participation is March 3, 2025.

GLIBA Board Addresses the American Bookseller Association

7/2/2024

"As a board one of the responsibilities that we take seriously is advocacy on behalf of the membership. One of the things that we have been watching closely is the expansion practices of Barnes & Noble. While we fully support expanding access to books, we have been increasingly concerned about the strategy that Barnes & Noble has taken in communities where there is already a strong Independent Bookstore in existence. All of us know of situations where this is happening. To that end, we have sent the following letter to the ABA on behalf of all our membership expressing our concerns about this and other issues related to unfair practices that impact our businesses."
- Tim Smith, GLIBA President

Dear ABA Board,

We are writing to you as a regional trade organization to voice our concerns about a few issues connected to the health of independent bookstores as they relate to Barnes & Noble. As you know, there was a time when Barnes & Noble was seemingly on the brink of collapse. At this time both the ABA and various other groups within the world of bookselling were extremely concerned about what impact their demise would have on the overall book business. Out of that concern we all agreed that they, and by proxy the larger book industry, would benefit from them being supported alongside the indie channel. The consensus was, essentially “at least they aren’t as bad as Amazon.”

Since then, Barnes & Noble has bounced back. They are now in an aggressive growth pattern that has shown up in predatory store openings that directly threaten established independent bookstores. Most recently they have acquired Tattered Cover, one of the country’s most celebrated independent bookstores. Instead of approaching this purchase honestly, they are planning to operate the store under the Tattered Cover name instead of their own. This looks like them trying to benefit from the history of an outstanding independent bookstore. While it is good that the neighborhoods that have supported Tattered Cover will not lose access to books, it is still a troubling situation.

Additionally, Barnes & Noble is also consistently violating on-sale dates. Publishers have also given them preferential treatment as recently as the announcement of Suzanne Collins’ next Hunger Games book. Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Bookshop, and many others had pre-order options for this book minutes after the news of this release. Indiecommerce stores couldn’t promote the book until at least Sunday because there was no record for the book, and still on the Monday following there was no cover art to use. We totally missed any opportunity to capture pre-orders on one of the biggest announcements in quite some time. This all feels very reminiscent of the 1990’s independent bookselling environment where bookstores were all constantly at odds with publishers for fair options to promote upcoming books. Then it was Barnes & Noble, and Borders that were getting assets, and selling books in ways that independents could not. This set up an unfair competitive advantage for the chains. We can’t afford to go back to this reality. Too much was done to fight for ourselves to go back to that place.

So, what do we do? We come together again to defend ourselves against unfair competition. We ask you, as our representative in rooms we don’t all have access to, for your help. We ask you to make sure that Barnes & Noble cannot be looked at like the independent powerhouse that Tattered Cover once was. The events that they hosted alone were revolutionary, and Barnes & Noble should not have unfair access to simply carrying on what Tattered Cover built over many decades. Barnes & Noble, and Amazon should not be able to capture all of the publicity, and sales for huge new releases. That has to stop.

Thank you for listening. We are very concerned, but we remain steadfast in the belief that if we are all joined together in our common cause of truly connecting people through books in our stores we all will be successful. We need your help to be our voice. Please help us to continue advocating for strong independent bookstores that help bring life to our local communities.

In solidarity,
Tim Smith

Last week, the GLIBA/SIBA partnership we held The Indie Press Social in Louisville, Kentucky, headed by the Dream Team: Linda-Marie "That's just like, your opinion, man" Barrett and Larry "Calmer Than You" Law.

We must give a special shoutout to Sarabande Books for welcoming us with an amazing tour, and Carmichael's Bookstore for hosting all of us (and lending a great background for photos that's out of this world), as well as the rest of our participating indie presses: Beacon Press, Europa Editions, New Directions, Other Press, Soho Press, Two Dollar Radio & Verso Books. Many thanks for their insightful presentations, and further strengthening the bridge between indie presses and booksellers!

These presses have also curated the Indie Press Social Edelweiss Collection! Click here to check out several titles from their respective presses, both released and forthcoming!

Lastly, thank you to everyone who attended! Take a peek below into last week's events (thankfully, no one was beamed up)!

"The catalog encouraged me to order books I might not have otherwise, and I sold books that surprised me."

"The catalogs started working their magic as soon as they were on the counter. After they were inserted in the local paper, people started coming in with them, having marked the titles they wanted."

"The catalog is marvelous advertising for us, and brings in new customers every year!"

"The catalog is THE most valuable marketing tool we have for the Christmas season."
