Jim Dana Literacy Award
In 2013 the GLIBA Board of Directors voted to establish a program to give grants to literacy programs in our region. Bookstores nominate programs in their area that are working to increase literacy in their communities. The GLIBA board then votes on the nominated programs, and awards one grant of $1000 per year. The award is announced at the Heartland Fall Forum.
The program is the Jim Dana Literacy Award to honor the founder of the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association. Jim has been particularly dedicated to the idea that every person deserves to be able to read and write. After his tenure at GLIBA, Jim joined the Peace Corps to continue working toward this mission. Upon his return to the United States Jim is still involved in trying to make universal literacy a reality.
In 2014, the Jim Dana Literacy Award was given to the Catalyst-Howard School, nominated by Suzy Takacs of The Book Cellar in Chicago, IL.
In 2015 the Award was given to the Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force, nominated by Terry Whittaker of Viewpoint Books in Columbus, IN.
In 2016, the Award was given to three organizations: The Kentucky Refugee Ministries, nominated by Carmichael's Kids Bookstore of Louisville, KY., Andy's Books for Kids, nominated by Read Between the Lynes of Woodstock, IL., and River Valley Reads, nominated by Village Lights Bookstore in Madison, IN.
