The Great Lakes Independent Bookseller Association is proud to introduce the “Tim Smith Education Travel Scholarship.” This scholarship is designed to support independent booksellers by providing them with the financial resources necessary to travel to and learn from veteran booksellers within the Great Lakes region.
It is our intention, through a mentorship pairing, to further support booksellers by pairing them with a veteran bookseller who can provide training, expertise, and insight into the bookselling industry. With this scholarship, GLIBA hopes to continue to build community among booksellers, as well as recognize veteran bookstores who have exemplified the qualities we value most of independent bookstores, not the least of which being the profound impact within their communities and their fellow bookselling community.
This award is named after Tim Smith, who has served on the GLIBA Board of Directors for 8 years, ending his tenure as the President of the Board. Operations Manager at Schuler Books and contributing member on several organizational committees, Smith exemplifies qualities that the Great Lakes Independent Bookseller Association was founded upon with extending expertise to fellow stores, regularly teaching courses with the Professional Bookseller School, and being a fierce defender against censorship within his own community.
The GLIBA Board of Directors will preside over the selection process for this scholarship, ensuring a comprehensive and equitable evaluation of applicants. Applications and nominations are now being accepted/will be accepted, providing an opportunity for individuals to put forward themselves or fellow booksellers within our region.
• This program is designed to help bookstores get support in specific areas by connecting them with experienced mentor stores.
• Bookstores in the Great Lakes region can apply for a travel scholarship to visit a mentor store.
• Both the visiting bookseller and the mentor store will receive a scholarship to support their participation.
• Applications are now open!
